Mike Mussina

As many of you know Mussina is retiring. I don't want to get into his hall of fame status too much here. In my eyes what a hall of famer should be, Mike Mussina is found wanting. But in the real world and who is actually in the hall of fame, he should absolutely be in. That's pretty much as far as I want to get into that.
I was listening to the radio and two moments discussed about Mussina's career that came up were the exact two that will always stick out in my memory. The first was game four against Oakland in the 2001 divisional series. Best of five, Yankees down 2 games to none. This game is best known as the "Jeter flip game" which over shadowed the brilliant 1-0 victory of Mussina. He gave the Yanks everything they needed and more that game.
The second moment is when he came in relief in the 2003 ALCS. Most people remember this game for "Aaron Bleeping Boone" and Mariano Riveras awesome 3 inning relief stint. The only reason any of that was possible was Mike Mussinas first career relief appearance. He came in the game, first and third no out. He got the yanks out of the jam without giving up a run. That inning is what made the miraculous come back against Pedro in the eighth inning possible.
To Mussinas credit, a lot of pitchers don't go out on top and on their own terms. Mussina will. So thanks for the memories, good luck coaching little league and the New York Times crossword.

No way he gets in...glad he called it quits and didn't tarnish his career by coming back past his prime, but we can't start letting gorilla's into the aquarium...they just don't belong, catch my drift jimmy fenimore from jimmyfenimore.com @ jimmyfenimore@gmail.com....
