TRL: End of an Era

As many of you know, TRL has been cancelled. The truth is, for years we have heard this was coming. Instead of having MTV kill something from our past fast and rip it off like a band-aid, they made us sit and wait, knowing the doom around every ratings period. The day has finally come. Some of us remember when the show started, some picked up in the middle, and a lot of you never gave a crap about TRL because for you it was pointless. Back when I was a young man, oh ten years ago, there was no itunes. The internet had porn and the Anarchist Cookbook, so user generated content wasn't in existence. We learned about new music from one place only. TRL. It seems silly now, well it seemed silly then too, but TRL was a huge deal. People desperately wanted to know what the most requested song was that day, people cheered when a Backstreet Boys song was retired because it was number 1 for too long, and kids with short hair that was dyed with peroxide all went bonkers the first time Eminem showed up. That was TRL. Carson Daily guiding you through that after school snack and helped you avoid homework as long as possible. It was a great time.
Once Carson left the show was never the same for those of us who were with it in the beginning. Sure, Carson was a complete tool, but that's what made it fun. Seeing him interview people that were way, way cooler then him... priceless. And how did he ever land American Pie Tara Reid? I mean, todays Tara Reid, the drunk that hangs out at my local pub can hit it and quit it. But American Pie Tara Reid? She was grade A. That's what TRL was able to do for you. That's how big that show was.
Like I said, it's no surprise it's gone, but if you are part of my generation, it may be the last thing from our high school days to go. I don't think there's anything left to kill off. I know many of you have successful jobs and are looking to the future. So you don't have time to reminisce on the past. But me? I don't have a whole lot going on right now. Some people think this blog is a big deal, it's really not. So it's my pleasure to peek back for you, and remind you of those good times.

No better way to play it out, then one of Mariah Carey's absolutely loony toon moments on TRL...
